Summer Tips to Protect Your Pet

Summer breeze, longer days, barbecues, and fun in the sun. We love summer and so do our pets, but the summer heat means making some changes to the way we do things to protect our pets from heatstroke and paw burns. Keep reading for some changes you may want to consider making this summer.

Take Morning Walks

What dog doesn’t like taking walks and exploring? However, as it tends to get warmer earlier in the day, so does the asphalt, which can burn your dog’s paws. If you have noticed the temperature rising, it may be time to consider rescheduling your afternoon walks for the early morning or late evening. If you must continue afternoon or late morning walks, consider purchasing paw boots to protect your dog’s paws during the walk and a cooling mat for them to relax on when they get back home.

Stay Inside

Does your dog love to be outside and laying in the sun? Of course, we do not want to deprive them of this relaxing activity, but to protect your four-legged friend you must do what is best for them and sometimes that means not letting them lay out too long. The safest place for your pet during the summer is inside where it is cool. If you have a stubborn dog that absolutely insists on being outside, consider adding a pool with ice and water for them to cool down in and a shaded area to get out of the sun. Also, make sure they have fresh cold water that is replaced regularly.

Avoid Car Trips

If you regularly take your pet for car rides while running errands and they like hanging out in the car while you run into the store, that is fine during cooler months. However, during the summer the inside of your car gets dangerously hot very quickly. Unless the stores you are visiting have drive-thrus or are pet friendly, it is best to leave your pet at home and save those car rides for cooler days.

Be sure to reach out to your veterinarian with any concerns you have about keeping your pet cool this summer.
