Our canine companions may have far different needs than humans, but we do share one thing in common–the need to take good care of our teeth and gums. Doing so involves more than just brushing frequently, though. We’ve outlined how to best care for your dog’s oral health so they can stay healthy, happy, and fresh.
Brush Several Times a Week
Your dog’s breed will ultimately dictate if you should be brushing every day or just once a week. To err on the safe side, we recommend brushing at least once to twice per week. Doing so will be easier for both of you if you invest in some canine toothpaste, which comes in fun flavors like chicken, beef, and peanut butter.
Use Additives in Their Meals
You can sneak in some dental powders during chow time to feed your dog’s oral health. These can be applied to both food and water and contain enzymes that help fend off tooth decay. Always check with your veterinarian before giving your dog these products.
Give Them a Dental Chew
Most treats decay the teeth, but dental chews do just the opposite. These yummy and healthy snacks fight plaque and tartar buildup while keeping your puppy’s teeth sparkling and breath fresh.
Provide Chew Toys
Another easy way to maintain clean teeth is with chew toys. These scrape away plaque and tartar as your dog chews to keep up good oral hygiene.
Try Prescription Dental Food
Are the above options not enough to keep your dog’s breath fresh and their teeth healthy? Your veterinarian can prescribe clinically-tested kibble to aid in the reduction of tartar at a higher level.
Visit Your Veterinarian Frequently
We recommend professional dental cleanings as recommended by your veterinarian to clear out hard-to-reach plaque in the teeth and gums and make sure your dog’s tooth roots and jawline are in shape with x-rays.
